It's only been three weeks and I'm already so happy with the results.
I have had some side effects but they have been very minor. The only one that bothers me at all is breast tenderness. I had some hot flashes the first week but they went away quickly. Sometimes I'm a little nauseous or headachy, but only if I don't drink enough water. Since this is a diuretic, you need to stay on top of your water consumption and try to drink as much as you can every day. I was interested in trying spiro before birth control, just because it's easier to get a hold of, cheaper (I'm uninsured), and potentially fewer side effects.
And so far, so good! I did 4 days of half a tablet per my Apostrophe derm's recommendations and with no side effects, I went to a full 100mg tablet. I was worried about lightheadedness or nausea, but I haven't had any of that. Admittedly I do take it at nighttime to avoid any side effects interrupting my day and that means I do get up in the middle of the night to use the toilet. It's not a big deal to me and honestly, this makes you pee all the time, all day. Taking it in the morning wouldn't change that.
As far as results - not sure. I'm only 3 weeks in and while I'm heading into my pre-cycle week, I've had a few minor whiteheads on my jaw, but no cysts. It's hard to say if it's a lucky month or the spiro is already working (it can take 2-3 months to see full effect). Either way I'd say it's got no side effects, it's reasonably priced for 3 mos/90 tablets, and it's a better long-term option than birth control (for me, I need to see a gyno to get the right hormones I need and seeing a specialist like that is way out of my budget right now). My acne seems to have settled down more consistently than on Yaz. I'm combining this with small amounts of .05% Trentinoid every other day and so far so good.

A few years ago, the NP at my dermatologist's office recommended Spironolactone off-label to treat my acne. It worked amazingly and my skin was pretty flawless during the time I took it. Eventually my insurance changed and I could no longer see that dermatologist, so I let my script lapse and hoped that my zitty days were over.
Unfortunately, my acne did come back eventually once I quit Spiro, although not as bad as I had previously had it. Still, I found myself with more scars and feeling ashamed of my face. I longed to get back on Spiro but didn't want to deal with the hassle of finding another doctor, going there, going to the pharmacy, etc etc. Apostrophe popped up one day recently in my Facebook stream and specifically advertised that prescriptions for Spiro were available.
I went to the website, filled out the forms, took some pics of my acne-ridden face, and within a day I had a brand new script for Spiro as well as tretinoin/niacinamide, which is also great. I'm now on my third week of treatment and my oily skin is balancing out, and I've only had a couple of breakouts since beginning the Spiro and Tretinoin regimen. If you're a lady in your late 20s to 50s, and you're still struggling with acne, Spironolactone may be the solution to your skin problems, as it addresses the hormonal component which is causing the excess sebum and acne to begin with.
The only side effects I've ever experienced are a flatter tummy (due to diuretic effect), bigger boobs (win!), having to pee a bit more in the beginning, and my period is harder to predict (kind of a great thing though, since I've suffered with PMDD for years and it usually disrupts my life significantly, but with Spiro I don't have any PMDD symptoms, so I just get a surprise period. My acne is very much hormonal, and I have high androgens which includes oily skin, a bit more little hairs on my chin than would be considered normal, acne, and prone to being aggressive. I'm not sure if that is part of the purge, and it isn't obvious unless you look up close, but it is not a pleasant sight. I am using this in combination with tretinoin so it's hard to tell which product is contributing to this.
I took off a star because the pills smell and taste absolutely terrible. Mine smell like weed and taste like weed smells. They also taint my breath so I have to take this before brushing my teeth in the morning. I had really bad acne when I was younger and even went on Accutane. That helped and my skin really cleared up in my 20s, but when I hit my 30s, I started getting really painful cystic acne on my neck and jawline. I went online to see if Accutane was still prescribed and found a bunch of Redditors talking about Spironolactone. When I saw I could get it online without waiting months for a derm appointment, I figured there wasn't any harm in trying it. I'm so glad I did. A couple months into treatment and not a single cyst. I still get the occasional pimple, but none of those huge, painful ones. I personally have had no side effects, so I can't speak to those. I also sometimes forget to take my meds and that hasn't affected my results at all.

I have only been taking this prescription for about a month now and so far so good. My skin is still far from perfect and I still have a long way to go, however it has not gotten worse since I have starting taking it, and for the most part I would say its gotten better with less acne, still acne, but not as bad as it was. Hopefully it will continue to get better!
